China has effectively increased the transformation and industrialization of a large number of patents, with an industrialization rate of invention patents held by companies spent from 44.9% in 2020 to 53.3% in 2024, announced Sheng Changyu, director of the national intellectual property administration of China on Thursday.

Mr. Shen unveiled these figures at a press conference during which he presented the achievements in the field of intellectual property during the period of the 14th five-year plan (2021-2025) and answered the media questions.

According to the balance sheet established in June this year, the number of valid national invention patents reached 5.01 million, an annual increase of 13.2%. The number of high value invention patents has been 15.3 for 10,000 people, said Shen.

The country had around 48.96 million valid brands at the end of June 2025, up 6.6% over a year.

In addition, the dominant position of companies in technological innovation continues to strengthen, said Shen. A total of 524,000 Chinese companies have valid invention patents at the end of June 2025.

The total number of valid invention patents held by these companies reached 3.7 million, representing 74.4% of the total number in China, an increase of 6.1 percentage points compared to the end of the period of the 13th fiveth plan (2016-2020).

This progress is fully in accordance with the fact that companies in research and development (R&D) of companies represent three -quarters of all social investments in R&D in China, said Shen. This testifies to a continuous improvement in their capacity for innovation and confirms their central role in the generation of new technologies, he added.

The three areas displaying the highest growth rates of valid national invention patents in China until June 2025 are: Information technology management methods, IT technologies and medical technologies, with respective annual increases of 34.1%, 22.7%and 19.8%. These figures are significantly higher than the average growth rate of valid national invention patents, he revealed.
