China’s first provincial germplasm resource bank, located in Chengdu, capital of southwest Sichuan Province, is now fully operational, according to reports published in Science and Technology Daily on Monday.
Since the genes of most species are contained in their seeds, germplasm resources have become essential carriers of plant genetic information.
Sichuan province is famous for its rich biodiversity and abundant germplasm resources. Its diverse topography creates a variety of climates and habitats that support a wide range of plant and animal species.
The bank includes a plant germplasm resource zone, a livestock resource and aquatic resource zone, and a popular science exhibition zone. It fulfills three main functions: collection and preservation of resources, research utilization, science popularization and exhibition.
“Noah’s Ark” of the seed industry, the bank plays a crucial role in promoting the conservation and utilization of germplasm resources in Sichuan and the southwest region, encouraging innovation in modern breeding and guarantee food security and the supply of major agricultural products.
Germplasm resources can be preserved for up to 50 years, which can meet the demand for standardized preservation for animal and plant germplasm resources in Sichuan in the next 30 to 50 years.
