The growing power of China’s navy, marked by the advent of a “three-carrier era”, will enable the country to better protect its national sovereignty and territorial integrity, a Chinese mainland spokesperson said on Wednesday.
The commissioning of the Liaoning, Shandong and Fujian aircraft carriers represents a major breakthrough in strengthening national defense and the armed forces, Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said at a press conference.
“The advent of the ‘three-carrier era’ constitutes a significant breakthrough in China’s military development and defense, and represents decisive steps in the advancement of the people’s armed forces toward world-class capabilities,” Chen said.
This enhanced capability will serve to “safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and thwart any force or plot seeking to violate or divide China’s sacred territory,” Chen said.
The spokesperson’s remarks followed a media question regarding the recent commissioning of the Fujian, China’s first aircraft carrier equipped with electromagnetic catapults.
The commissioning of the ship, which attracted strong attention in Taiwan, was hailed in some media as a demonstration of the remarkable progress made by the Chinese mainland, both in terms of new-quality productive forces and defense capabilities.
