Introduction
On March 7, the high-end interview column of “National Vision, Local Action” of China Daily published an exclusive interview with Comrade Wang Ning, a member of the National People’s Congress and Secretary of the Yunnan Provincial Party Committee, inviting everyone to travel to Yunnan and experience the beauty of “starting from mountains and rivers and returning to fireworks”. The report was spread through newspapers, websites, clients, and new media platforms, and attracted widespread attention at home and abroad.
Wang Ning, a representative of the 14th National People’s Congress and Secretary of the Yunnan Provincial Party Committee, invited everyone to travel to Yunnan and experience the beauty of “starting from mountains and rivers and returning to fireworks”.
Travelers are defined as staying in a place for at least two weeks from outside the province to experience the local natural scenery, culture and lifestyle. “Traveling” is not only about going to a place, but also about experiencing a local life.
Wang Ning said that in the past two years, more and more people have come to Yunnan and no longer “check in” in a hurry, but choose to live for a while and experience in depth “there is a kind of life called Yunnan.” Last year alone, nearly 4 million travelers stopped in Yunnan.
When living in Yunnan, you can enjoy 6 world heritage sites, 8 national historical and cultural cities, 777 traditional Chinese villages, 624 national A-level tourist attractions, countless internet celebrity check-in attractions, and endless cultural and tourism experiences such as health care, ecology, and study.
As the host of the United Nations Biodiversity Conference, Yunnan has unique climatic conditions and ecological environment, rich products and diverse ecological resources. It is a popular destination for those who want to spend time with forests, lakes and hot springs and escape the scorching heat and cold.
During the Third Session of the 14th National People’s Congress, Wang Ning said that traveling and living has quietly changed the lifestyles of many young people. Many of the tourists from Beijing, Shanghai, Zhejiang and other places are newly graduated college students. They do cultural and creative industries, sell agricultural products, open bookstores and coffee bars, bringing new vitality to the countryside, and also drive local villagers to run supermarkets, go to express delivery, toast bread, etc. to increase their income.
Tan Lijun (female) and his wife from Guangdong Province came to Tuguachong Village, Qujing City to start their travels and living. They found that the locally produced Chai Kiln pottery in Qujing was very distinctive, and friends from Guangdong liked it very much, so they started to broadcast online sales at home.
There are many new villagers like Tan Lijun and his wife in Tugua Chong, including painters, writers, yoga coaches, etc. Their arrival has brought back the indigenous people. Through the “industry + travel and residence” development model, local villagers work in nearby agricultural product processing sites, or open small restaurants, supermarkets, snack bars, etc., and the increasing number of travelers are able to find employment at their doorsteps. The previously “empty” village has thus revitalized.
Frenchman Janik Benizhou, 40, said he “especially likes living in Yunnan because the climate there is very pleasant.” “The winter is not too cold, and the summer is not too hot. The most important thing is that there are clear blue skies all year round.”
“Since coming to Kunming, I have found that I can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities throughout the year, such as hiking, camping, rock climbing, cycling and mountaineering, which is very convenient.” He also appreciates the diversity of Yunnan, whether it is ethnic culture, climate or terrain. “From the snowy mountains in Shangri-La to the tropical rainforests in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan has lakes, canyons and mountains. Living in Kunming allows for easy access to various scenery. This diversity is envied by many people,” added Janik, adding that the cost of living in Yunnan is also relatively low.
According to local government information, in 2025, Yunnan will make a solid start to launch a new brand of “Hi Yan in Yunnan” and strive to reach 6 million people in the city.
Wang Ning said that starting this year, Yunnan Province will implement the three-year action plan to live in Yunnan. In accordance with the requirements of marketization, specialization, scale, standardization and branding, all parties in society will work together to build no less than 3,000 key travel villages, develop new business forms such as health care, study, culture and sports, and elderly care, and create a set of private customized “life blind boxes” for traveling friends who have come from afar. He said this will increase consumption and promote rural revitalization and Yunnan’s economic development.
He said: “We will promote the upgrading of Yunnan tourism from sightseeing to in-depth tourism from the consumer side, and build more attractive and competitive tourist destinations.” He added that Yunnan Province will revitalize idle rural assets, revitalize urban existing housing, introduce advanced concepts and models, cultivate various cultural and tourism enterprises, and launch the sign of “traveling in Yunnan”.
