The Chinese president, Xi Jinping, visited an IA incubator on Tuesday in Shanghai, calling on the city to take the lead in the development and governance of AI.
This inspection visit took place four days after a study session devoted to AI organized by Chinese leaders, during which Xi had underlined the need to take the initiative in this strategic sector.
“AI technology is evolving rapidly and is entering an explosive growth phase,” Xi said, also secretary general of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party and president of the Central Military Commission, while visiting the Shanghai Foundation Model Innovation Center, an incubator of large models housing more than 100 companies.
During the group study session last Friday, Mr. XI stressed that AI, as a strategic technology leading the new cycle of the scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation, profoundly changed the way people work and live.
The Central Party Committee attaches great importance to the development of AI, and has improved the design of the highest level and strengthened implementation efforts in recent years, Xi said at the session.
In the incubator, Mr. XI participated in a fair on the theme of the autonomous evolution of intelligent agents of the next generation and discussed with young innovators on site.
“AI is an emerging industry, and it is also an industry that belongs to young people,” said Xi.
He then went to an AI product experience store, where he learned in detail about the functions and trends in the product market, and tried a pair of smart glasses to experience it.
