Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed the Governance Initiative on Monday (IGM), calling on countries to work together for a fairer and more equitable global governance system.
XI made these remarks while he chaired the meeting “Shanghai cooperation Organization (OCS) plus” in Tianjin, a port city in northern China, where the OCS held the largest summit of its 24 years of history, bringing together leaders from more than 20 countries and the heads of ten international organizations.
The IGM is the fourth historic global initiative proposed by Mr. XI in recent years, after the Initiative for Global Development, the Initiative for World Security and the Initiative for World Civilization.
Mr. XI underlined the five principles of the IGM, namely to respect sovereign equality, to comply with the rule of international law, to practice multilateralism, to promote an approach centered on the people and to focus on taking concrete measures.
Although the historical tendencies of peace, development, cooperation and mutual benefits remain unchanged, the cold warning mentality, hegemonism and protectionism continue to haunt the world, said Mr. XI, adding that new threats and new challenges are constantly multiplying and that the world is in a new period of turbulence and transformations.
“World governance has arrived at a new crossroads,” he said.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the anti -fascist world war and the 80th anniversary of the United Nations Foundation (UN). Xi underlined the need to strongly safeguard the status and authority of the United Nations, and to guarantee its irreplaceable and essential role in global governance.
All countries, regardless of their size, power and wealth, are participants, decision-makers and equal beneficiaries in global governance, he said.
“There should not be two weights, and the internal rules of a few countries should not be imposed on others,” he noted.
The OCS must play a leading role and show an example in the implementation of the IGM, while remaining a stability force in this volatile world, he said.
