Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday put forward four proposals aimed at accelerating the process of women’s overall development.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the World Women’s Summit in Beijing, Xi said the proposals were put forward to reach broader consensus, open new paths and take more concrete measures for the cause, as women’s overall development still faces complex challenges.
The Chinese president called for joint efforts to create an environment conducive to the growth and development of women and foster strong engines for high-quality advancement of women.
“Their overall development is carried out against the backdrop of peace and tranquility,” Xi said.
He stressed the need to strengthen the protection of women and girls in regions affected by war, conflict, poverty or natural disasters, and to support the vital role of women in conflict prevention and the reconstruction of their homes.
It is crucial to improve anti-violence mechanisms and firmly address all forms of violence against women, Xi added.
The Chinese president proposed cultivating strong momentum for the high-quality development of women’s causes.
Xi urged efforts to address the imbalance and inadequacy of women’s development around the world, so as to enable all women to share the benefits of economic globalization.
It is important to harness scientific and technological innovation to promote the high-quality development of women and help them play an even more leading role in green development.
Xi also proposed developing governance frameworks to protect women’s rights and interests.
He called for improving institutions and laws, introducing more concrete and accessible policy measures, as well as making more quality resources available to all women in the areas of health and education.
It is crucial to promote an inclusive and harmonious social environment that frees women from discrimination and prejudice, expand channels for women to participate and debate political affairs, and support their extensive engagement in state and societal governance, he noted.
Xi stressed the need to foster an environment respectful of women, and make gender equality a code of conduct adopted by all members of society.
He also proposed writing a new chapter in promoting global cooperation on women.
He called for supporting women so that they can play a substantial role in global governance and share in the benefits.
Xi also expressed support for the central role of the UN, asking it to pay more attention to the needs of women in developing countries, and create broad cooperation platforms for women of all countries.
