Chinese President Xi Jinping and other Party and state leaders attended a ceremony in Tian’anmen Square in central Beijing on Monday to present flower baskets to the people’s heroes.

The event was organized to commemorate Martyrs’ Day, observed a day before the National Day. This year, the country celebrates the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC).

Around 10 a.m., Mr. Xi and other leaders — Li Qiang, Zhao Leji, Wang Huning, Cai Qi, Ding Xuexiang, Li Xi and Han Zheng — arrived at the square. They were joined by representatives from all levels of society.

Among the more than 2,400 participants carrying flowers were veterans, relatives of martyrs, winners of national medals and honorary titles, exemplary people, students and children.

At the start of the ceremony, all participants sang the national anthem, then paid silent tribute to the heroes who devoted their lives to the liberation of the Chinese people and the development of the PRC.

Nine large flower baskets, with ribbons reading “Eternal Glory to the People’s Heroes”, were placed in front of the Monument to the People’s Heroes.

Mr. Xi and other leaders marched to the base of the monument, where he straightened the ribbons on the baskets. He then marched around the monument at the head of the other leaders to pay tribute to the heroes.

The ceremony was presided over by Yin Li, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and secretary of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee.
