Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday called on the nation to remain confident in the coming year, saying the world’s second-largest economy can overcome its challenges and pressures through diligent efforts.
Xi made the remarks in his 2025 New Year message, broadcast via China Media Group and the Internet.
In 2025, we will complete the implementation of the 14th Five-Year Plan. We will adopt more active and effective policies, focus on quality development, strengthen scientific and technological autonomy and capabilities, and maintain the good momentum of economic and social development, Xi said.
According to Xi, “China’s economy is experiencing new conditions, including challenges related to external uncertainties and pressure from substituting new development engines for old ones.”
“But we will prevail through diligent efforts. We have grown through storms and emerged stronger from trials. We must remain confident,” Xi reminded.
Reviewing China’s footprint in 2024, Xi said the Chinese economy is back on track, with GDP expected to exceed 130 trillion yuan (about $18.08 trillion) this year. Cereal production broke the record by 700 million tonnes.
He also said China has developed new quality productive forces based on field conditions. New sectors, new activities and new business models have continued to emerge. China produced more than 10 million new energy vehicles for the first time in 2024. New progress has been made in the fields of integrated circuit, artificial intelligence and quantum communication.
