Chinese President Xi Jinping said Saturday that economies in the Asia-Pacific region should strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation, seize new opportunities, meet new challenges and jointly forge a sustainable and prosperous future.
The call was made in a speech titled “Forging a Sustainable and Better Future Together” at the second session of the 32nd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting.
The new wave of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation is intensifying today, opening up new horizons for humanity, Xi noted.
At the same time, the world faces sluggish economic growth and a widening global development gap, with challenges such as climate change, food security and energy security intensifying, he said.
Mr. Xi presented a three-point proposal.
First, he urged Asia-Pacific economies to further unlock the potential of digital and smart development to give their region a new edge in innovation-driven development.
They should make full use of new technologies to strengthen themselves and move forward, seize the opportunities brought by digital, intelligent and green development, and act more quickly to nurture and foster new-quality productive forces, Xi said.
He also called for efforts to promote safe and orderly data flow, deepen cooperation on open source technologies and build an open and competitive ecosystem for innovation.
Economies in the Asia-Pacific region should keep in mind the well-being of all humanity and promote healthy and orderly development of artificial intelligence (AI), while ensuring that it is beneficial, safe and equitable, he said.

China has proposed the establishment of a Global Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization to provide the international community with public goods in the field of AI, Xi said, adding that his country is willing to work with all APEC members to improve AI knowledge and narrow the digital and AI divide in the Asia-Pacific region.
Second, Xi called on Asia-Pacific economies to remain committed to green and low-carbon development to build a new paradigm for sustainable development in their region.
They should keep in mind their responsibility to future generations, strengthen synergy among green development strategies of all economies, promote the free circulation of quality green technologies and products, accelerate the green and low-carbon transition, and vigorously combat climate change, Xi said.
Since announcing peak carbon and carbon neutrality targets, China has built the world’s largest and most dynamic renewable energy system, he noted.
It also submitted its nationally determined contributions for 2035 on combating climate change and will implement the system of dual monitoring of the volume and intensity of carbon emissions at all levels, he added.
Third, Xi called for building an inclusive and universally beneficial future to foster new dynamism in the inclusive growth of the Asia-Pacific region.
He called on economies in this region to always put people first and strengthen policy communication, experience sharing and results-oriented cooperation to fully implement the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, jointly eliminate poverty and promote shared prosperity for all people in the region.
Economies in the Asia-Pacific region should make full use of APEC’s traditional strength in economic and technical cooperation to facilitate balanced growth in developing economies, Xi said.
China will act more quickly to improve the system that provides life-cycle population services to all its citizens and promote high-quality population development, he assured.
China will encourage the implementation of initiatives to deploy AI in healthcare and improve women’s digital skills, so that the entire Asia-Pacific region can benefit from cooperation in APEC, concluded. Mr. Xi.
