Northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region saw its gross domestic product (GDP) expand 5.4 percent year on year in the first half of 2024 to reach 921.14 billion yuan (about 129.09 billion U.S. dollars), local authorities said Wednesday.
From January to June, the added value of the region’s primary sector exceeded 58.01 billion yuan, up 5.3 percent year on year, and that of the secondary sector increased by 9 percent to over 391.30 billion yuan.
The added value of Xinjiang’s tertiary sector increased by 3 percent to 471.83 billion yuan.
Growth in the secondary sector was the main driver of the region’s economic development in the first six months, said Hao Junqing, head of the regional statistics bureau.
The added value of industrial enterprises above a certain size increased by 8.3 percent year-on-year, with non-metallic mineral product manufacturing being the main driver of industrial growth, Hao added.
The region’s foreign trade volume grew by 48.4% year-on-year in the first half of the year.
