China’s first Type 054B frigate, named Luohe, was commissioned into service with the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy on Wednesday morning at a military port in Qingdao, east China’s Shandong Province. ).
The Luohe frigate, bearing the hull number “545”, has a displacement of approximately 5,000 tons. This next-generation frigate, independently developed and built by China, has advances in stealth technology, combat command systems and firepower integration, significantly improving overall performance.
Equipped with strong capabilities of comprehensive combat operations and various military missions, the warship will play a vital role in improving the overall combat effectiveness of naval mission forces.

The launch of the Type 054B frigate was confirmed by the Ministry of National Defense at a press conference held in August 2023. Wu Qian, spokesperson for the ministry, said that the navy’s development of the PLA of key combat ships in accordance with relevant programs was a normal process to satisfy national security requirements and aligned with the overall development goals of the Navy.
The move aims to safeguard the country’s sovereignty, security and development interests while contributing to global and regional peace and stability, Wu said, adding that China has always been committed to a path of peaceful development and adhered to a national defense policy of a defensive nature.
