The Ministry of Finance announced Wednesday that funds of 649 million yuan (about $91 million) have been allocated to support flood response and disaster relief efforts in several Chinese regions.
The central government funds, which were allocated Tuesday, will specifically support typhoon and flood response and disaster relief in Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang, Anhui, Fujian, Shandong, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces, as well as Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Chongqing Municipality, the ministry said in a statement.
The funds will be used to help these regions carry out works such as repairing damaged water projects and facilities, as well as studying and eliminating safety risks, in order to ensure the smooth operation of water projects and facilities during the main flood season, the statement said.
The Ministry of Emergency Management noted Monday that seven major river basins in China are bracing for the main flood season in August, a period when flood disasters can occur in multiple regions and water levels can rise beyond control lines in some rivers. It also warned that two or three typhoons will make landfall this month, affecting the country’s southern and eastern regions.
