China’s telecommunications sector saw steady growth in the first eight months of the year, driven by emerging businesses, official data showed.
Telecom service revenue totaled 1.17 trillion yuan (about 167.6 million U.S. dollars) between January and August, up 2.7 percent year-on-year, according to the Ministry of Industry and Technology. information.
Over this period, emerging sectors, such as big data, cloud computing and the Internet of Things, have maintained good performance.
China’s three telecom giants, namely China Telecom, China Mobile and China Unicom, saw their revenue from emerging businesses increase 10.5 percent year-on-year to 289.7 billion yuan, leading to an increase of 2.4 percentage points of total sector revenues.
Specifically, revenues generated by cloud computing and big data jumped 12.3% and 61.6%, respectively, compared to the same period last year.
The three companies’ high-speed Internet access services generated 181.6 billion yuan between January and August, an increase of 4.6 percent year on year, the data showed.
