The 22.13 km Tianshan Shengli Tunnel, the world’s longest highway tunnel, was officially opened to traffic on Friday.
Crossing the central part of the Tianshan Mountains in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the tunnel cuts a mountainous journey that previously took several hours to just 20 minutes.
As a vital artery connecting urban centers in northern and southern Xinjiang, the G0711 Urumqi-Yuli Expressway, including this tunnel, came into operation on the same day.
