More than a third of China’s major development goals for the 2026-2030 period will focus on solving the difficulties and pressing problems that people are most concerned about, an official said at a press conference on Saturday.
To concretely improve the population’s education and health standards, the draft program of the 15th Five-Year Plan sets targets to increase the average schooling period of the working-age population, the average life expectancy and the number of health professionals per 1,000 population, said Zheng Bei, deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).
China will strive to increase the share of medical beds in elderly care facilities and provide more high-quality care services to meet the needs of elderly people who have lost their independence or have dementia, she said.
Liu Dechun, official in charge of social development at the NDRC, said at the press conference that the draft program calls for greater efforts to improve child care services and increase the kindergarten enrollment rate of children under three by six percentage points.
To foster a more birth-friendly society, measures will be adopted to expand maternity insurance coverage and fully implement parental leave, Liu said.
