A Chinese mainland spokesperson on Wednesday reiterated the mainland’s willingness to work for peace across the Taiwan Strait.
Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, made the remarks in response to a question about the visit of a delegation of the Chinese Kuomintang (KMT) party led by its president, Cheng Li-wun, to the mainland.
The delegation arrived in Shanghai on Tuesday. This visit to Jiangsu, Shanghai and Beijing will continue until Sunday. This is the first time in a decade that a KMT president has traveled to the mainland at the head of a delegation.
“We are ready, on the common political basis of upholding the 1992 Consensus and opposing ‘Taiwan independence,’ to work with political parties, groups and individuals in Taiwan, including the KMT, to promote peaceful development of cross-Strait relations,” Zhu said.
She said the two sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one China and issues concerning the two sides of the Taiwan Strait should be resolved through consultations among the Chinese people, adding that people on both sides have the wisdom and ability to resolve their own issues.
