Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Macau on Wednesday afternoon aboard a special plane.
Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, will attend a gathering marking the 25th anniversary of Macao’s return to the motherland and the inauguration ceremony of the government of the sixth mandate of the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR).
Xi will also carry out an inspection tour of the Macao SAR.
In a brief speech at the airport, Xi said that over the past 25 years, the practice of “one country, two systems” with Macao characteristics has achieved success widely recognized by the world, making proof of great vitality and unique charm.
Describing Macau as “a pearl on the palm” of the motherland, he expressed confidence in Macao’s bright future. “It is the glory of the people of Macau and the pride of all the Chinese people,” he noted.
“Every visit to this magnificent place has been very pleasant for me,” Xi said.
On behalf of the central government and the Chinese people of all ethnic groups, he extended sincere greetings and best wishes to all people of Macao, adding that the development of Macao and the well-being of its people have always been his concerns.
Xi said he will have extensive and in-depth exchanges with friends in Macao on regional development during the visit.
He expressed his belief that Macao would create an even brighter future by making full use of the institutional advantages of the “one country, two systems” policy, working hard and actively promoting innovation.
