Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday called for advancing high-quality urban renovation during his inspection tour in Shanghai.
Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, emphasized the need to fully embrace the people-centered philosophy of urban development.
Urban renewal initiatives must be carried out thoroughly, carefully and effectively to continually enhance people’s sense of satisfaction, happiness and security, he said.
In Huangpu District, Xi visited a residential area where four buildings originally built in the 1950s have been renovated and modernized, significantly improving residents’ living conditions.
He stressed that the Party Central Committee attaches great importance to urban development and is committed to building modernized cities for the people, with the renovation of old residential areas being an important part of this effort.
At a retiree’s home, Xi carefully examined the living conditions and said the CPC is dedicated to serving the people, and only when the people live in peace and contentment can the Party and government rest assured. He expressed hope that retirees can fully enjoy their retirement and lead an even better family life.
Xi then went to a local produce stall to inspect the supply of fruits and vegetables. He stressed the importance of improving neighborhood governance and building well-equipped neighborhoods and convenient living environments.
During the inspection visit, Xi stressed that China is currently in a critical period in flood control. He urged all local authorities to prepare for worst-case scenarios and extreme situations, closely monitor rainfall, flood conditions and typhoon developments, conduct thorough and careful inspections to identify potential risks, and make sustained efforts in flood prevention and control, emergency response and disaster relief to effectively protect people’s lives and property.
Cai Qi, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and director of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee, accompanied Xi on the inspection tour.
