The 2024 “Understanding China” Conference, focusing on Chinese modernization and new opportunities for the world, opened Tuesday in Guangzhou, capital of south China’s Guangdong Province.

The conference of the year, under the theme “Pulling reform through to the end — Chinese modernization and new opportunities for global development”, brought together more than 600 participants including politicians, officials, researchers , foreign envoys and media representatives.

The event, which continues through Wednesday, includes six parallel seminars, 14 thematic forums, two closed-door panel discussions and exhibitions featuring short films and achievements of China’s modernization efforts.

The conference will also focus on the economic dynamism and potential of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, considered a key driver of Chinese modernization. It will explore development opportunities in various sectors against the backdrop of the era of digital intelligence, low-level economy and new quality productive forces.

Other subjects will also be discussed, in particular, the protection and succession of cultural and historical heritage in the context of modernization, as well as in South-South cooperation.

Guangzhou, located in the center of the Pearl River Delta, with a permanent population of more than 18 million, is a world-famous port city and one of China’s most open and market-oriented cities. It has a long and deep cultural history characterized by openness, inclusion and a spirit of innovation.

This year’s event was jointly organized by the China Institute for Innovation and Development Strategy, the Chinese People’s Foreign Policy Institute and the Guangdong provincial government.
