Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump visited the Temple of Heaven in Beijing on Thursday.
Mr. Xi greeted Mr. Trump outside the Hall of Prayers for Good Harvests. The leaders posed for a photo in front of the room and toured it.
During their visit, Xi told Trump that in ancient China, state rituals were performed at the Temple of Heaven, where leaders of the time prayed for national prosperity, social harmony and favorable weather conditions for good harvests.
“This reflects the traditional Chinese understanding that the people are the foundation of a state, and only when the foundation is solid can the state be stable,” Xi said.
The Chinese Communist Party has inherited and carried forward this people-centered philosophy rooted in Chinese civilization, he said.
By remaining true to its fundamental commitment to serving the people wholeheartedly, the Party has won the unwavering support of the Chinese people, Xi added.
Mr. Trump said he was impressed by the Temple of Heaven, which is more than 600 years old. He said that the United States and China were two great countries, and their people were wise and great.
He called on the two countries to deepen mutual understanding and strengthen friendship between their peoples.
