Chinese President Xi Jinping hosted a banquet at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Thursday to welcome US President Donald Trump for his state visit to China.
At the banquet, Xi said China-US ties are the most important bilateral relationship in the world today.
“We must make them work, and never compromise them,” Xi stressed, adding that both China and the United States have everything to gain from cooperation and everything to lose from confrontation.
“Our two countries must be partners rather than rivals,” he noted.
Xi also said the two sides agreed to establish a constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability to promote steady, healthy and sustainable development of China-US ties, and bring more peace, prosperity and progress to the world.
“Looking at the development of China-U.S. relations, whether we can respect each other, coexist peacefully and cooperate in a win-win spirit is crucial for the relations to progress stably,” Xi said.

Noting that China-US relations concern the welfare of more than 1.7 billion people in the two countries and affect the interests of more than 8 billion people around the world, Xi said the two sides should live up to this historic responsibility and steer the giant ship of China-US relations steadily and in the right direction.
In his remarks at the banquet, Trump said the two sides had positive and constructive exchanges.
Stressing that the ties between the United States and China constitute the most important bilateral relationship in the world, Trump added that the two countries should strengthen cooperation to build a better future for the world.
