Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Michelle Bachelet, candidate for secretary-general of the United Nations (UN) and former president of Chile, in Beijing on Thursday.
China will participate in the selection of the next UN Secretary-General in a responsible and constructive manner, and strive to promote the UN to revitalize its authority and vitality, better adapt to new circumstances and better meet new challenges, said Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.
Ms. Bachelet stressed that the UN constitutes the indispensable platform for the international community to jointly address global challenges, adding that the UN must uphold the authority of the Charter, remain action-oriented and take coordinated measures to advance the three pillars of peace, development and human rights.
Emphasizing its firm commitment to the one-China principle, Bachelet praised China’s long-standing efforts to promote multilateralism and the UN cause, and expressed readiness to work with China and the international community to jointly strengthen the status and role of the United Nations.
Noting that China has always been a steadfast supporter and active participant in the cause of the United Nations, Wang said China is willing to work with all parties to preserve, revitalize and strengthen the United Nations.
